In this article, taken from our previous heritage issue, our Greater Govanhill Photography Group attempt to capture the transient nature of life in our city, as part of our project to document the area, and build our own photographic archive.

In our last issue, we asked our photography team to look at old pictures of places in Govanhill and take new pictures of those same places today. In this article we share the results of that photo challenge assigned to the group for our local heritage issue.

As hubs of social life, pubs have been woven into the fabric of British culture, serving as gathering spots for generations. Through James Bowden’s photographs, taken in the late 80s, we delve into the history and community spirit of the Southside’s drinking establishments. What we found were stories of protest, preservation of Scotland’s footballing legacy, the centre of a manhunt and more.

Last week the Greater Govanhill show, kicked off Buenafest, by bringing listeners all the latest from the new issue of our magazine, packed with stories about local artists, culture and subcultures.

We caught up with Simon Murphy, before the release of his first book, GOVANHILL. He gave us insight into how the project first developed and how he decided what photo would feature on the cover.

Govanhill…As I See It – Photography Exhibition was a culmination of film photos of people, places and buildings that bring the people of Govanhill joy and capture the spirit of their neighbourhood.

The GALLANT Photo Map celebrates the wealth of community-based, sustainability-focused projects in and around Govanhill. People from the community working alongside photographers from Open Aye and Glasgow uni to map the area.

This Friday sees the launch of our collaborative exhibition, as part of Scotland’s Year of Stories and the Govanhill International Festival and Carnival. Twenty-five images of objects that have meaning for their owners will be on display in the shop and cafe windows around Govanhill.

A temporary exhibition organised by the association Romano Lav, showcased the past and the present of the Roma community in Govanhill and launched a new archive.
