Greater Govanhill Photography Group: Then & Now

In our last issue, we asked our photography team to look at old pictures of places in Govanhill and take new pictures of those same places today. In this article we share the results of that photo challenge assigned to the group for our local heritage issue.

In our last issue, we introduced the newly formed Greater Govanhill photography group – made up of nearly 50 people and welcome to everyone from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. As part of building this community, developing and sharing skills, each month, we set a photo challenge. For our heritage special, we asked members to recreate photos taken around Govanhill provided by the Glasgow City Archives.

In some recreations, the scenes seem barely changed – noticeable only by the modes of transport and fashions. In others they are barely recognisable and require a good deal of imagination to draw the line from past to present.

To go digging around this resource yourself, visit The Mitchell Library to view them online at: www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell. If you fancy having a go, we’d love to see your recreations of old images.
