Project Present: Donation drive for Govanhill children this Christmas

Source: Project Present

For over a decade, Project Present, a Christmas present drive for local children in need, has been brightening the holidays for young people in Govanhill. What started as a small clothing drive has grown into a full-fledged community initiative, not only providing gifts, but also warm clothing, and essentials to families in need at Christmastime.

The volunteers behind the project work with local organisations like The Space, Daisy Chain Early Years, and Govanhill Community Development Trust to support families who need a little extra help. Last year, over 150 children received essentials like pyjamas, new underwear, toys, and more.

I’ve seen the children come in with the clothing packs, wearing the clothes, or telling me what they got for Christmas. It warms my heart to see their faces light up. With everything going on, I thought we might see less support, but people are doing more. Even if you can’t give, just knowing it makes a difference is beautiful.

Volunteers make it all happen, with the community coming together to donate, wrap, and deliver gifts. Alanna Melville, a teacher in the area, who is also leading Project Present this year said: “I’ve seen the children come in with the clothing packs, wearing the clothes, or telling me what they got for Christmas. It warms my heart to see their faces light up. With everything going on, I thought we might see less support, but people are doing more. Even if you can’t give, just knowing it makes a difference is beautiful.”

Donations are needed by 8 December at the latest  to make sure everything is wrapped and ready for Christmas. If you’d like to help, get in touch with Project Present today by emailing: ppgovanhill@gmail.com
