Celebrating International Women’s Day in the Southside

 

This Saturday marks the beginning of International Women’s Day celebrations, over the next week there are a number of events taking place across the city. We thought we’d round up all the events happening in Govanhill and neighbouring areas. Check out our top picks in this article.

Radical International Women’s Day Rally

When: Saturday 8 March, gather at 12:30pm start at 1pm

Where: Buchanan St, Glasgow

What: Bring your keffiyeh, trans flags, banners and protest signs to our radical international women’s day rally this Saturday.

Women of Donegal | Christina McBride

When: Saturday 8 March, 7pm–4am

Where: Community Newsroom window, 82 Bowman St, G42 8LF

What: Women of Donegal is a simultaneous outdoor projection in Glasgow and Donegal on International Women’s Day. The event connects Buncrana where many had to leave, with Govanhill, where many chose to settle.

Romano Lav’s International Women’s Day programme

When: Saturday 8 – Thursday 20 March

Where: The Roma Cultural Centre, 43 Nithsdale Street, G41 2PZ

What: Celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Roma women – both locally and internationally, as well as creating space for relaxation and inspiration! Click here for more info.

Govanhill Bath’s International Women’s Day programme

When: Saturday 8 – Wednesday 12 March

Where: Govanhill

What: A week-long programme of political, activist and heritage based talks, workshops, film screenings and activist archery. Click here for more info.

Scottish Socialist Party: International Women's Day street meeting in Govanhill

When: Saturday 8 March, 11am

Where: Outside the Bank of Scotland on Victoria Rd

What: Speakers will include the SSP’s Southside Central council by-election candidate, young nurse and Unison trade union member, Olivia Murphy.

Reclaiming the Digital Space: Tackling online misogyny

When: Saturday 8 March, 2–4pm
Where: Queen’s Park Baptist Church, 20 Balvicar Drive, G42 8QS
What: An insightful discussion on feminist concerns surrounding data, technology, and the fight against digital misogyny. Click here for more info.

International Women’s Day Poster Making Workshop with Feminist Exchange Network, Romano Lav & YCSA

When: Wednesday 12 March, 4–7pm

Where: Roma Cultural Centre, 43 Nithsdale Street, G41 2PZ

What: The event will feature a range of different workshops in Filmmaking, Songwriting, Feminist Poster-making and more, open to all young women ages 12+. Click here for more info.

Ride Bright for International Women’s Day with Women on Wheels

When: Saturday 8 March, 5:30–8pm

Where: St Enoch Square to 72 Charlotte Street

What: This event is about visibility, confidence, and community, - inviting women to ride together, light up the streets, and promote safer, more inclusive cycling at night. Click here for more info.

Romane Phenia Fashion Show + Reception and Exhibition Launch

When: Saturday 8 March, 6–8pm

Taikon + Future in Your Hands Film Screening

What: Discover the inspiring story of Romani activist and author Katarina Taikon, a remarkable woman who transformed Swedish history. They will also show a short documentary by group of local young Roma women. Click here for more info.
