Time for One More Poem: Workshops at GZL

About the Courses

In these relaxed and informal sessions, published poet and experienced workshop leader Annie Muir will create a comfortable environment for a group of beginners to start their poetry journey.*

Each session will involve looking at a poem (or two!) and seeing what we can make of it as a group. This will be followed by prompts to get us started in writing our own poems. There will also be a break in the middle for tea and snacks.

While there will be some talk of poetry techniques, no prior experience is needed. The main purpose of the workshops are to discuss our general thoughts and feelings about the poem using our past experiences - and have fun!

*This time I will be running TWO different groups: one for complete beginners to poetry and one for either returning students who've already done the beginners course, or people who already have some experience of reading poetry.

Why Try Poetry?

I like reading poetry, and think more people would too if they gave it a chance. But I know a book or even a magazine full of poems can be overwhelming. So in 2016 I started giving out photocopies of one poem that I like every week to passers by outside local libraries. Some people who took the poem said they had never considered reading poetry before. Some said they don’t have time to read.

In his bestselling book, Happiness By Design, Paul Dolan states that: “Your happiness is determined by how you allocate your attention.” I think that by taking the time to read one poem you can create a new space – a private, mental space – separate from your day to day reality, which may be crowded or untidy. There is always time for one!
