How one group of residents turned their fly tipped lane into a community gathering space

Residents of Kingarth Lane and Kin Kitchen came together on 15 September to transform the often-neglected lane into a vibrant community hub. The event featured activities for children, a shared meal, and discussions on future improvements, including food planters and outdoor seating.

Kin Kitchen joined forces with Kingarth Lane residents with the aim to help transform the lane and use it as a community asset.

Last Sunday after a quick spring clean, the often fly-tipped Kingarth Lane became a wonderful space to meet the neighbours, share a meal made by Kin Kitchen, and dress up potatoes as silly characters with children.

The wonderful Make a Scene joined the event to help gather feedback and ideas about what we can do in the lane to turn it into a thriving community asset. So far we’ve had ideas around building planters for food growing, hosting semi regular events and workshops, art installations, and making an outdoor seating area and a play space.

Kin Kitchen will continue to work in collaboration with local residents doing more events in the lane and transforming it into a community space, keep an eye out.

Many thanks to everyone involved: residents, Kin Kitchen volunteers, Make a Scene, The Govanhill Community Development Trust for advice and support, Govanhill Baths and Offline for the equipment, Shawlands Continental for ingredients, Greater Govanhill for offering their space to meet and plan, and Milk for the loan of their kitchen.

If you live around Kingarth Lane and want to join our working group, please contact us on kinkitchenglasgow@gmail.com or Kin Kitchen Instagram.

[Ed] We’ll be reporting more about how they did this in Issue 16 of the magazine – out in October!
