Comic Strip: Little Donegal

Govanhill and the Gorbals were once known as ‘Little Donegal’ because of the large numbers of Irish migrants who settled here.  This four part comic strip was created for Greater Govanhill by storyteller, Rae Mackinlay.

Irish people have been part of Scotland since the Dál Riada tribe (the original ‘Scoti’) settled the West coast from 400AD onwards, and were a part of all stages of development of Glasgow, and the towns and villages surrounding it, including Govanhill.

Migration follows patterns, as family members, relatives and neighbours follow established paths and often settle close to familiar faces. This is how Govanhill and the Gorbals came to be known as Little Donegal, with a vibrant community life and a regular connection back to their home place. A ferry used to run three times a week between Glasgow and Derry.

A new book, Little Donegal: The Irish in Govanhill & the Gorbals has been written by Colm Bryce, using the history of his ancestors who arrived in the Gorbals at the end of the 19th century. The book outlines different periods of migration and aims to challenge some myths that still exist about the Irish in Scotland. The hope is to encourage others to do the same.

The Irish History Group at the Govanhill Baths is collecting stories and images from people about their family’s connection to Donegal and the Southside. Find out more at govanhillbaths.com/archive/littledonegal
