Festival 2020

Govanhill International Festival and Carnival, now in its fourth year, is an anti-racist festival. It celebrates the contribution immigrants have made to the diversity, culture, community and the rich history of the area.

In previous years the Festival has attracted thousands of people, running over 11 days with a programme of over 40 events. It included a book festival, walking tours, talks, gigs, theatre, art, workshops, films, and culminated in the Govanhill Carnival Parade leading to Queen’s Park.

COVID-19 Impact

As the advice on COVID-19 and its subsequent restrictions and lockdown have led to the cancellation of major events in August like the Edinburgh Festivals and Fringe and Brighton Pride, we looked at our own arrangements for this year’s Festival.

The Festival this year is smaller in scope with fewer partners and events. Safety of our community is paramount so indoor events, large gatherings and where social distancing cannot be guaranteed are being put online or restricted to small groups. All events being held indoors, or in confined outdoor spaces, will be ticketed and limited to manageable numbers. To avoid more people turning up on the day, the venue will only be advertised to ticket holders. Sadly the Carnival will not be taking place this year.

We are confident that we, along with our partners and the support of our community, will manage and ensure the safe delivery of our Festival and adhere to Government guidelines. We want to thank all our partners, in particular Govanhill Thriving Places and Glasgow City Council, for their financial support for this year’s Festival.
