Journalism Skills Training Course

Greater Govanhill are pleased to announce a free training course which will introduce young people who are under-represented in the media to a variety of journalism skills – including interviewing, video producing, writing and podcasting.

The course, which will run from mid March until the end of May, will be a mixture of in-person and online sessions. Each young person will receive one-on-one mentoring in developing their own stories and have the opportunity to collaborate with the other trainees.

No previous experience is required.

The course will be in two blocks. The first block will focus on Writing and Research Skills and include sessions on story development, article structures and interviewing. The second block will focus on Multimedia Skills and include sessions on producing video, audio, photography and design. The course will then culminate with the creation of a mini-magazine which showcases participants’ work.

The training course is entirely free with food being provided at in-person sessions. Transportation, technological or other financial barriers to attending the course can also be covered. The course is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the KFC Foundation.

The course is open to any young person aged 16-24 who is under-represented in the media. This idea of under-representation is entirely self-defined by each applicant. There is a chance on the application form to discuss this, this is entirely optional and up to the applicant’s discretion.
