Newsroom Facilities Officer – Paid Work Placement

Salary: £12.00 per hour 

Hours per week: 25 hours

Duration of contract: 22 weeks

Working pattern: Approximately 5 hours per day Mon-Fri. To be worked flexibly. Mostly within office hours but some evening and weekends required depending on events held in the space.

Location: The Community Newsroom, 82 Bowman Street, Glasgow, G42 8LF

Job Description

We are seeking a highly organised person to take care of facilities and events in our recently opened Community Newsroom in the heart of the Southside. This will involve managing the space day-to-day which includes our co-working desk, and regular events.

The role is for 25 hours a week which can be worked flexibly to fit in with your commitments. There may be some evening work depending on events we may be holding.

The Community Newsroom is a collaborative space run collectively by Greater Govanhill community magazine and investigative journalism co-operative, The Ferret. The space is used by both organisations and well as others who rent co-working desks. We also use the space for events including screenings, talks, panels, workshops and other events. Other organisations can rent the space for their own events too.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing co-working desk use

  • Restocking facilities eg tea/coffee etc

  • Managing contractors for any work needing doing eg electricians/plumbers etc

  • Keeping the space clean and tidy

  • Greeting visitors

  • Setting up for events and resetting the space after

  • Developing and implementing organisational systems

  • Setting up wall and window displays

  • Marketing the space to others and finding new revenue streams

  • Keeping newsroom users informed

  • Monitoring newsroom outgoings and incomes

  • Other administrative and communications tasks as required

Preferred skills, experience and qualifications

  • Enjoy using own initiative and work proactively

  • Able to manage own workload

  • Proficient with a computer and commonly used programmes such as Word, Excel etc.

  • Strong communications skills (verbal and written)

  • Highly organised and details-orientated

  • Experience of using file sharing platforms such as Google Drive

  • Experience of helping to run events

  • Friendly with great people skills

  • Experience working for a social enterprise/non-profit

  • Collaborative mindset - and able to work as a part of a team 

  • Preferably based in/near Govanhill
