Objectives:

Glasgow Artists’ Moving Image Studios SCIO was set up to develop dedicated screening facilities, workspaces and professional/educational development for artists working in moving image and other time-based practices. We are inviting a group of participants to collaborate with us on a research project we are developing in response to initial proposals for the redevelopment of Govanhill Picture House.

Supported by grant funding from Creative Scotland, the Working Group project aims to create a meaningful opportunity for both local residents and the broader arts community to respond to these proposals and contribute to the shaping of GAMIS as an organisation. This will be carried out through a series of online public talks followed by focused workshops and an opportunity to contribute to our future programming and organisational activities.

We are posing the questions, “what barriers to inclusion are there within the arts?” and, importantly, “how do we, as a newly formed organisation, build inclusion into the fabric of our programming methodologies?”

 Who are we looking for?

There is no singular ideal candidate, we want to encourage as wide a range of people as possible to apply. When selecting participants we are not looking for individuals to fulfill all necessary criteria, but instead will look to cover these attributes across the whole group. Priority will be given to those who live or work locally.

Necessary:

-       Current arts / curatorial / programming / film-making / performance-making practice (this can be early career, freelance, or from within an existing organisation)

-       Live or work in Glasgow, preferably southside / Govanhill.

-       Collaborative-minded approach to group work

-       Interest in provision for artists moving image in Glasgow / Scotland

-       Ability to commit to 7 full-day sessions over 7 months.

-       Responsibility for all matters in relation to their personal tax liabilities in connection to participant fees.

-       Have sufficient internet access and Zoom account (free to join) to participate in online meetings.

Preferred:

-       Demonstrable interest / investment in artist-run community engagement projects

-       Demonstrable interest / investment in non-hierarchical organisational structures

-       Interest in civic land advocacy

-       Interest in / experience of open source and/or community engaged programming

-       Direct experience of barriers to inclusion

-       Interest in deconstruction institutional hierarchies

-       Interest in non-conventional arts / film programming

What commitment are we looking for?

The Working Group will meet online for a full day once a month over seven months (6 meetings followed by a feedback session). Participants are expected to commit the full day, plus some preparation time in terms of reading or research. We have provisionally scheduled the following dates:

-       Thursday 22nd July - morning presentation: Teresa Cisneros

-       Thursday 12th August – morning presentation: So Mayer

-       Thursday 16th September 202 (morning presentation tbc)

-       Thursday 14th October 2021 (morning presentation tbc)

-       Thursday 18th November 2021 (morning presentation tbc)

-       Thursday 16th December 2021 (morning presentation tbc)

-       Mid – late January 2022: Final workshops and evaluation of project.

Do let us know if you have other commitments or needs which might affect which dates you can attend and we will try to create a schedule that works for all participants. All Working Group members will be offered a fee in recognition that they may need to reschedule other paid work, organise childcare or make other arrangements in order to participate.

Benefits of participating:

This is an opportunity for participants to share their knowledge and expertise with us and the working group through a paid opportunity. Participants' practices will be developed and enriched through discussion and planning sessions led by an independent facilitator. We want to challenge traditional institutional hierarchical structures by offering equal opportunities to all participants to steer topics of discussion and to devise a public facing programme. The facilitator will be tasked with devising a methodology for participation which empowers each member of the working group to contribute equally.

All Working Group participants will be given the opportunity to develop a proposal for a future project. These could be developed collaboratively or individually. We will then support you to develop these proposals into activities or events, for example, online screenings/workshops, or contributing to our outdoor cinema programme (if safety restrictions permit), seeking further funding support if required.
