Staying warm in a tenement in winter

We asked the newsroom team – veterans of Glasgow’s big, beautiful, and notoriously hard-to-heat tenement flats – for their top tips on staying warm in winter. We also reached out to our friends at South Seeds, who offer expert energy advice from their hub on Victoria Road.

The key is layers, layers, layers! Thin layers are better than one thick one, say our picture desk pros. Long johns and thermals are your best friends, and keeping your head, hands, and feet warm will help the rest of your body stay cosy. Similarly, insulate your flat with draught excluders and by doubling up on blinds and curtains.

An electric blanket is a smart investment – more energy-efficient than many people realise. Keep moving to stay warm, both indoors and out. For a change of scene, your local library offers a free warm space where you can chat, read, or browse the web.

Get to know your heating system. Adjust thermostats, set timers for when you’re home, and make sure radiators aren’t blocked by furniture. Bleed radiators regularly to maintain efficiency and use the valves to control heat distribution.

Need a hand with this? Book an appointment with South Seeds’ energy advice service – they can even visit your home. South Seeds can offer energy-saving tips and advice on schemes like the £150 Warm Home Discount, which is open for applications. Contact your energy supplier to check your eligibility or visit South Seeds for more information. You’ll find them at 514 Victoria Road, G42.
