About Greater Govanhill
Greater Govanhill was launched in 2020 – set up in response to the negative media coverage too often shared about the neighbourhood. Through taking a solutions focused approach to covering local issues, we wanted to celebrate local diversity and shine a light on the amazing people and projects in the area.
The aim has always been to:
challenge negative stereotypes
provide a platform for voices you don't typically hear in the media
equip people to tell their own stories
break down cultural barriers
bring people together
We're set up as as a Community Interest Company. This means we are a non-profit organisation, driven by social impact rather than lining the pockets of shareholders – and any profits we do make would get reinvested into the local community.
Despite only having a tiny team (equivalent to 3 full time staff), we have won around 10 awards for our work, gaining national recognition for our community-led approach. In every issue we support people who have never had their writing published before to tell the stories that matter to them.
We have heard countless tales of the positive impact our work has made – whether that's boosting someone's employability through free skills workshops, new volunteers joining a community group after our coverage or people feeling inspired to make a positive difference to the local neighbourhood.
And yet, our future remains precarious. Our revenue comes mostly from uncertain, short-term project funding, decreasing advertising sales and members who can afford to support us with a few quid each month. Despite these challenges Greater Govanhill is – and always will be – free for all to read.
Any money we raise throughout the month of June will be be doubled by the Indie News Fund – an opportunity for you to show your support for the magazine in a really meaningful way.
We'll use this money to:
Run FREE training workshops for people wanting to learn journalism & photography skills.
Cover the printing and design costs for one our issues
Host community conversations on the topics that matter.
