International Women’s Week & Mother’s Day Events

On International Women’s Day we focus on our neighbourhood of Govanhill and the surrounding area to bring you a round-up of events celebrating the women in our lives. We are also bringing you some of the special Mother’s Day events happening so if you’re running late with your gift this year we have a few suggestions.

International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates women and all their achievements – social, economic, cultural and political. It is also a day to acknowledge women’s fight for equality and acknowledge inequalities. In Scotland, women currently earn 90 pence for every pound men earn. Women are also more likely to be the survivors of domestic violence. Of the 64,807 domestic violence incidents recorded by Police Scotland in 2021, 81 percent of these had a female victim and male perpetrator.

As we mark this day, it is critical to reflect on the current treatment that women across the globe are facing and consider the avenues for change through an intersectional lens. Whether we are looking at the violence women are facing in Palestine or the systematic inequalities on our doorsteps.

In this article, we focus on our neighbourhood of Govanhill and the surrounding area to bring you a round-up of events celebrating the women in our lives. We are also bringing you some of the special Mother’s Day events happening so if you’re running late with your gift this year we have a few suggestions.

While Mother's Day is a cherished occasion for many, we recognise that it can also be a challenging day for some. We hope that regardless of how you choose to spend the day, it proves to be fulfilling and enjoyable.
