Greater Govanhill Radio Show - and Playlist - Launches 31 March!
Following on from the launch of Issue 2 of the magazine... we're so excited to bring you the first ever episode of the Greater Govanhill show.
It will be broadcast on new local community radio station, Radio Buena Vida, from 1-2pm on Wednesday 31st March.
Listen again here:
Once again, it's been an incredible community effort in pulling it together, with so many different people bringing their skills, experience, ideas and enthusiasm.
For the first episode we’re talking language and identity with folk from all over the world who call Govanhill home. Including:
Behind the scenes with the language of Punjabi food at Ranjit's Kitchen
Poetry on the Southside, food and belonging from Sean Wai Keung
Romanes language taster and information about International Roma Day from Rahela Cirpaci of Romano Lav
Kate Samuels reflecting on life in lockdown far from her home country as she reads her article: Pickles in a Pandemic - in Search of Home
Artist Aga Paulina Mlynczak on her fascinating project, 'Teach me a Word You're Afraid to Forget'
Songs and playground rhymes in different languages from some of the kids at Annette Street Primary School
And if that wasn’t enough, we have music Shazammed from the streets of Govanhill, as well as tracks from Govanhill-based artists. Our theme music is made by Joel Cox sampling a recording by Ando Glaso.
If you hear a tune played from someone’s car, or a local shop/take away, Shazam it and send it to hello@greatergovanhill.com
This episode was created by Craig Hunter, Giacinta Frisillo, Grace Jackson, Katie Revell, Rhiannon Davies, Mark Cunningham and Robbie Armstrong. But just as with the magazine, we’re keen to platform a diverse range of voices. If you'd like to be involved with a future episode - no matter what your experience - contact: hello@greatergovanhill.com or fill in the form below.
Govanhill Playlist
We asked folk who live in the area to send in their tracks for consideration to be played on the show. Unfortunately we couldn’t squeeze them all in. But we were so impressed with the quality and range, we wanted to share them with the world anyway. So here are some of our favourites. You might also hear them on a future episode!
We’re going to keep adding to this list. If you have have some music to share, post in the comments below or send to hello@greatergovanhill.com to be included.
I’d like to be involved with future radio shows!
